Dumortierite was first described in 1881 and takes its name from the French paleontologist Eugene Dumortier. Dumortierite looks very much like sodalite and lapis lazuli. Its colors range from pale to dark blue. The unusually attractive blue color of dumortierite quartz is appealing to both men and women and can often make an excellent. Since dumortierite quartz is one of the rarer varieties of quartz, it's probably not something you'll find to be readily available in local jewelry stores, which means that you may need to order it from a specialized shop.
